3. In terms of the premium for National Pension Insurance, will a different premium be charged based upon gender or age? May I apply for a premium subsidy because I am in a household of a relatively low income?

  1. National Pension Insurance premiums will not be differentiated based upon age or gender. The government, however, will offer a higher percentage of the premium subsidy if the insured person is physically or mentally disabled or is in a household of relatively low income. The percentage of premium subsidies offered to different types of insured persons are, respectively:
    (1) General Insured Persons: Government supports 40% and the insured person is responsible for 60% of the insurance premium.
    (2) Low Income Households: Government will provide a complete subsidy. The insured person is not required to pay the premium.
    (3) Middle-Low-Income Households: Government supports 70% and the insured person is responsible for 30% of the insurance premium.(Starting from June, 2020,)
    (4) Households of Which the Income Has Not Reached a Specific Level: Depending on the financial status of the family, the government will support 70% or 55% and the insured person is responsible for 30% or 45%.
    (5) Physically/mentally disabled people holding disability manuals: The percentage of premium subsidy will be determined based on the severity of disability:
    A. Severely/Extremely Severely Handicapped: The government will completely subsidize the premium. The beneficiary is not required to pay the premium.
    B. Medium-level Handicapped: Government supports 70% and the insured person is responsible for 30% of the insurance premium.
    C. Mildly Handicapped: Government supports 55% and the insured person is responsible for 45% of the insurance premium.
  2. If your family is in relative poverty but not qualified as a “Low-Income Household,”or” Middle-Low-Income Households”, you may contact the county (city) government or the township (village/city/district) offices of your household registration to confirm your eligibility for the National Pension Insurance premium subsidy under the reason of “income not reached a specific standard”. Once the eligibility has been verified by the county (city) government or the township (village/city/district) offices, you will be entitled to an increased percentage of the premium subsidy from 40% (for the general insured persons) to 70% or 55%, depending on the financial status and structure of the household.
  3. On a monthly basis, the county (city) government will submit to the Bureau of Labor Insurance (BLI) the updated information of the low-income households, middle-low-income households, households of “income not reached a specific standard” and the physically/mentally disabled individuals. The BLI will allocate subsidy according to the updated information. No further formalities are required from the insured person.
